CAIRD PARK GOLF COURSE, DUNDEE

1st Caird park .tif

Caird Park golf course has long been popular with local golfers. In fact it had the honour back in the 1980’s in terms of rounds played of being the most popular golf course in Europe .

There’s nothing fancy about Caird Park, just a good steady test that will certainly keep you entertained from start to finish. Trees are a consideration but far less than Caird Park’s sister course, Camperdown at the other side of town. The opening holes are fairly short and straightforward. It’s when the Ghellie Burn comes into play from holes 6-13 that the action begins. The design is such that there’s a visual similarity to some of these holes. But playing them requires a variety of sound golf shots. The 6th is a long dogleg to a raised green where by now you should be warmed up. The 9th is a fairly zesty Par 3 to a platform green, a good short hole.

The 11th is a great Par 5, perhaps the best hole on the course and commences a series of good holes most crossing the Ghellie Burn. If you get a great drive off at the 11th you could consider taking on the burn but most play it as a Par 5 for safety sake. The 12th is a long Par 3 at 238 yards crossing back over the burn to a shelf-like green and is probably the hardest hole on the course. 13th plays back over the burn yet again, uphill and sometimes to a blind green. If you can hold your game together over this middle section you should be able to post a good score.

The closing holes are fairly easy – the 18th being slightly awkward uphill to a blind green. Other than that, Caird Park is an easy walking course. That is partly why it’s so popular; golfers are happy to play two rounds here without feeling the after-effects – too much!
