Oldest Restaurant in Vienna
Our farewell dinner was at Mayer Restaurant ‘Pfarrplatz’, the oldest restaurant in Vienna dating back to 1683. Ludwig van Beethoven used to eat here regularly when he lived just down the street.
STRUM ALONG
These traditional wine taverns called “Heurigers”, specialise in regional dishes and wine accompanied by live “Heuriger” music.
I was particularly taken with the Strum, a very drinkable grape juice only available during harvest time. Our timing was perfect! The problem is that strum keeps fermenting in the bottle, so you’ve no idea what the alcohol content might be; 8% or more if a bottle is kept for a few days.
All of the wines served at Mayer come from the restaurant’s own cellars.
All I can say is we had a very merry last night.
TERMINATOR
This trip to Austria was a mere introduction! I liked what I saw so much that I’m determined to come back for a much longer stay.
I’d never considered Austria as a golf destination, but it has such a host of superb courses, great food & wine, delightful hotels and a wealth of culture you could easily stay for a week or more!
As that Austrian actor and former governor of California said (several times), “I’ll be back!”
