Prague, The City Time Forgot

Prague has been high on most hotlists for a couple of decades. It used to be uber cheap! Not quite so much these days but there’s still great value in getting to know this place.

When I arrived, local taxi drivers were staging a ‘go-slow’ along the highway between the airport and city centre to protest at much cheaper Uber rates. It’s their own damn fault! Taxis here were notorious for double-dipping tourists.

Hopefully, they’ve learned their lesson - but I doubt it. You should expect to pay around €20/$20 depending on traffic from the airport into town in a regular cab. But to be safe, take an Uber!

Charles Bridge is built with a series of medieval stone arches that cross the River Vltava. Construction was started in 1357 and finished in the early 15th century.

The streets of the Old Town have barely made it to the 21st century - let alone the 20th… or even 19th!

Prague is one of the world’s most culturally vibrant & visually captivating cities! The streets of the Old Town have barely reached the 21st century let alone the 20th… or even 19th!

Take a stroll down St Wenceslas Square towards the Old Town or across the dark spans of Charles Bridge and you get the picture! This is a very easy place to fall for and I strongly recommend sampling it - sooner than later! Just in case it changes! But I doubt it!

BOUNCING CZECHS

I was staying near Wenceslas Square at a hotel called ‘The Icon’, (www.iconhotel.eu), kind of boutiquey, centrally situated and run by really nice people. It’s ideal really!

I like Czechs! They’re positive, confident, direct and easy to engage with! They’re good-looking too! Don’t some people annoy you?

Stepping out of the hotel, it’s clear that the free market economy is firmly re-established here in the Czech Republic. In Prague for sure, there are gleaming company offices, ritzy fashion shops and swanky BMWs.

OLD TOWN

We were heading for dinner! The street cars were steamy and packed with commuters. This is another way of living! Ok, it’s only modestly different from my own day-to-day experiences but enough to appreciate the varied pace of life from place to place, culture to culture that we can visit! Such is the travelling life!
